Features and description

The Ship Inn, also known as The Bottom Ship, is located in the tranquil harbour settlement of Porlock Weir. The pub is situated around 1 mile west of the inland village Porlock, 9 miles from Minehead and 11 miles east of Lynton and Lynmouth (over the Devon border). Porlock Weir is a short distance from the A39 coast road which passes through the nearby village of Porlock and provides good road connections to the M5 motorway at Bridgwater and Taunton. The settlement lies on the picturesque West Somerset coastline within Exmoor National Park and overlooks the Bristol Channel towards South Wales.

Porlock Weir is an ancient seaside port surrounded by steep wooded slopes and heather covered moorland. This picturesque area is bustling with visitors, especially during the summer months, and is particularly popular with walkers, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy activities such as boat trips, crabbing, paddleboarding and walking the South West Coastal Path, a section of which runs along the harbour. Holidaymakers also visit the independent local shops and the small museum which highlights the history of the village.

The harbour and much of the surrounding area is part of the Porlock Manor Estate, which has been linked to the Blathwayt family since 1686. At that time, William Blathwayt was Secretary of State to King William III and married Mary Wynter. Porlock was one of the Somerset Manors left to Mary and has since been passed down the Wynter-Blathwayt family line.

The Ship Inn is a detached property of stone construction under a pitched, thatched roof. To the rear is an outbuilding which houses the staff and ancillary areas which, again, is of stone construction under a pitched, tiled roof.
