Distinctive by design - This business centre preserved one of the last remaining examples of Victorian accommodation built for railway workers, with a modern wrap-around extension that respects the buildings historic core. In collaboration with Studio Downie Architects and Studio Mackereth, the work on this building, created a range of different areas to work and focus - including raised platforms in the industrial-inspired lounge.
Rich history - Built in the mid-1860s, This building was originally one of five innovative social housing projects for railway workers. Their fire safety standards were improved by the use of concrete rather than wood and brick, while the flat roofs created spaces where residents could dry laundry and children could play safely away from the streets. Natural light - The wrap-around extension designed in conjunction with Studio Downie Architects creates a modern shell contrasting with the Victorian core. Dubbed the 'Stanley Swap', this extension brings plentiful natural light into the space, which is further enhanced by a sustainability focused lighting design system.
Sustainability - The workspace sustainability ethos is apparent throughout this hub; from the verdant roof terrace, a rainwater harvesting and purification system, solar panels to help reduce energy intake, a thermal energy capture system to reduce heat loss and a low energy lighting system run on sensors. The original Victorian building was innovative for its flat roof, which created both leisure and practical spaces for residents. The updated workspace here continues this ethos with a green roof terrace where members can relax or work amongst the characterful original chimneys of this historic building, and even host events with a view.
