The Universidad neighborhood, also known as Malasaña, is a dynamic student area with cafes, bakeries and vintage clothing stores. Since the end of the 20th century, it has been associated with the area of Malasaña, although there is no consensus on the area it would comprise, even so, Malasaña does not officially exist. It is named after the Caserón de San Bernardo, the former headquarters of the University of Madrid, located on San Bernardo street. The nickname of the neighborhood - Malasaña - would come later, as a result of the street dedicated in 1879 to the Malasaña family and since 1961 to the young seamstress Manuela Malasaña, killed by Napoleonic troops during the days of repression following the Uprising of May 2,1808, under the accusation of “carrying weapons”, for carrying sewing scissors when she was arrested.
Due to its strategic location between the neighborhoods of Chueca and Argüelles (near the University), the streets around Malasaña were the focal point of the movements of the so-called Movida madrileña of the 70s and 80s. Bars with a moderate concert circuit such as El Penta and La Vía Láctea came to be considered places of worship.
