The convent, founded in 1519 by King Manuel I, was built on a site where there was already a votive hermitage to Saint Anthony. Originally located in a wilderness next to the Tagus River, it offered the friars an environment of isolation and tranquility. After the extinction of the religious orders in 1834, the convent became private property.
