Peace and tranquility are feelings engendered when you encounter this superb early 16th century Grade II Listed country residence, nestling in about 2.55 acres of grounds surrounded by countryside in an aonb. Magnificent internal features include sand blasted beams, oak doors, sandstone fireplaces, witches marks, oak framed leaded light windows and lathe plasterwork, while externally the impressive chimneystacks, Kent peg tiled roof, 16th century Dutch brickwork, gable dormers and white weatherboard elevations give it instant appeal.
Iron gates lead to the double garage, a herb garden and box parterre to the old oak front door. The hall has original York stone floors, an oak staircase, a cloakroom and oak archways to the characterful dining room with its inglenook fireplace and terracotta floor tiles and to the awe-inspiring triple aspect drawing room featuring reclaimed oak parquet flooring, fitted shelving, a stone fireplace and a log burner. The dual aspect sitting room includes reclaimed burgundy limestone flooring, a brick fireplace and log burner and leads to the large kitchen/breakfast room with an oil fired Aga, bespoke oak units with quartz worktops housing various appliances, a central island, an historic hand painted fresco border and a larder.
Upstairs there is a family bathroom and four good sized characterful bedrooms with countryside views including the principal with period elm flooring, a fireplace and fitted oak cupboards, an ensuite bathroom and a large dressing room/bedroom. The second bathroom has underfloor heating and an antique Belgian blue sink housed in marble reclaimed from the London Stock Exchange. The top floor features a spacious sitting room partially divided by a chimney breast and a superb beamed double bedroom with an ensuite incorporating Moroccan Zellige tiles and a gold shower.
The oast annex has a circular living room with a sculptural bespoke Brazilian walnut staircase, limestone flooring, access to the shower room and the Devol kitchen with a double oven electric Aga and flat fronted wood units housing additional appliances. Upstairs includes a double bedroom and a fabulous sun terrace.
What the Owner says:
The saying goes ‘home is where the heart is'. We lost our hearts in minutes to this deeply special place. By the time we saw the unobstructed valley view from the first floor we were sold and offered to buy the property on the spot. The name this property comes from two ancient English words that together mean ‘the place of hill and steeply wooded river valley.' It is a house that is very much of its place; created as it was from the surrounding oak forests and sandstone under their roots. So many special memories have been created here for our family. Christmas around the fireplace is particularly special, but happy too have been the many BBQs, birthday parties and time together in the hammock under the crab apple tree. We leave with a rich inheritance from the house; a deep love and respect for nature and the old ways instilled in our children.
We hope that whoever is lucky enough to be the next custodian will appreciate and enjoy it as much as we have. During our time here we have used only master craftsmen to restore and reinvigorate the fabric of the building and celebrate the extraordinary location with thoughtful, compassionate interventions in the grounds and gardens. From snow on the newly created lawn terrace, to tens of thousands of additional spring bulbs, summer meadow flowers jostling against the refurbished and relined swimming pool and new hedgerows bursting with fruit, we have extended the fecundity and usability of the space across the year.
