Carlton cottage is situated on the fringe of the historic village of Pluckey, reputed to be England's most haunted village in England, a fact endorsed by the Guinness Book of records in 1988. Pluckley's beautiful village church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and for over 900 years, the church spire has peered down over the village bearing silent witness to the changes the village has undergone.
More recently the village is famous for it's filming of the 'Darling Buds of May'. Pluckley itself benefits from a post office and general store and local butchers and farm shop. There are two historical pubs namely 'The Dering Arms' built as a hunting lodge to the Dering estate and now famous for its seafood menu and the 'Black Horse' gastro pub. The village also boasts a vibrant sports and social scene, including tennis, cricket and football clubs, gardening and music and choir group.
There are several footpaths in and around the parish making it ideal for dog walkers. The local Church of England primary school received a 'Good' rating from Ofsted making it popular with families with young children. For older children there are well regarded secondary and grammar schools in nearby Ashford, as well as prestigious independent schools in the area. Pluckley station is just a short walk away from the cottage and has services to London while the village itself is less than 7 miles away from Ashford Town Centre and Ashford International Station which operates the High Speed Link to London in just 38 minuters. Junction 9 of the M20 is the closest motorway link. The Cinque Port town of Tenterden and the market town of Ashford are close by offering a comprehensive range of shopping facilities including supermarkets, banks, restaurants and local specialist shops along the Mc Arthur Glen shopping outlet.
