Situated on the western edge of Bix, The Fox is a charming former public house now converted to a unique family home. The Grade ii-listed property was built in 1935 in the Arts and Crafts style for W.H. Brakspear & Son, a local brewer from Henley-on-Thames, and is an attractive red brick and timber framed construction. Internally many of the building’s original features have been incorporated into the conversion, including exposed beams and brick fireplaces and parquet flooring; the timber-framed bar counters are a charming talking point. The conversion has been well executed to create a well-planned layout that’s ideal for modern living, with generous reception areas suited to entertaining and plenty of storage. Outside, there is a generous gravel driveway and a large rear garden with mature trees, overlooking the countryside beyond.
The pub closed in the early 2000s and was converted
to a home by the vendor around 20 years ago. The
sympathetic conversion has kept many of the pub’s best
features: A panelled staircase, the large fireplaces and
part of the original bar, while creating a substantial and
relaxing home. The house also has a cellar, with potential
for conversion to a cinema room/further usable space.
The ground floor is separated into two halves: At the
front, the reception hall leads to an inviting sitting room
with wood-burning stove, a separate dining room with
bar area, a study and a cloakroom – all well configured
for entertaining. To the rear there is an open plan kitchen
and breakfast room with adjoining laundry room, a home
office, further cloakroom and a shower room.
Upstairs the bedrooms are arranged around a central
landing, including a principal bedroom open to an en
suite bathroom with freestanding bath, four further
double bedrooms, a family bathroom and a separate
shower room.
Outside
The Fox enjoys a semi-rural setting surrounded by
fields, over which there are lovely views to the rear.
The detached house is approached via a gravel
driveway with ample parking for a good number of
cars. Mature planting around the house adds colour
and hedges around the boundary separate it from the
neighbouring houses and the road. The garden to the
rear is also an excellent size and enclosed by hedging
and wooden panel fencing, with the space dominated
by two majestic oak trees. A number of new trees
have been planted and there are attractive borders of
shrubs and scented herbs. A paved terrace provides
space for dining outside.
