description
Rarely do you get the opportunity to own a slice of Gosport history with links to royalty and literature set in a conservation area with outstanding views over the Solent, the Isle of Wight and beyond. Crescent Road was conceived by local business man Robert Cruickshank to make sea bathing popular in Gosport, as it was across the rest of Georgian Britain.
Originally designed to be named Anglesey Ville, the architect is believed to be Jacob Owen of Portsmouth. Conceived in 1826, the Crescent was completed circa 1829/30. It is star Grade Two listed, and has had the patronage of the likes of Princess Victoria in 1830 and Charles Austin, the brother of Jane Austin, dined at the hotel in 1839. The gardens opposite were originally going to be the site of sea baths, fed from a pump house close to Clayhall Road to feed sea water to the baths. The site was also home to a racecourse, with the inaugural race held in August 1832 and overseen by Lord Wellesley of the famous Duke of Wellington family.
This site is dripping in history, style and charm and it's available to buy for the amazing price of offers over £290,000!
