Eyemouth is a small town and civil parish in Berwickshire, in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland. It is two miles east of the main north–south A1 road and eight miles north of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The town's name comes from its location at the mouth of the Eye Water. Fishing at Eyemouth dates back to the 13th century and the harbour is still active with its colourful fleet. Like other coastal communities in the 18th century, smuggling was rife amidst the clusters of houses, narrow wynds, caves and underground tunnels. The solitary mansion of Gunsgreen House on the south side of the harbour was at the centre of this illicit trade in wine, spirits, tea and tobacco. It has been a visitor attraction since 2009. Berwick upon Tweed offers further services including supermarkets, national retailers and a mainline rail station with regular services to London Kings Cross (3.5 hours) and Edinburgh (45 minutes). Plans for a new station at Reston are advancing, with construction due to start in 2021. The new station will have capacity for 70 car parking spaces and electric vehicle charging points. It is expected that the journey time to Edinburgh Waverley will be about 35 minutes.
