Timeless Charm
This exceptional period building was originally owned by the eminent Parks Family – Lords of Upton in the Middle Ages. It is likely that a dwelling was on this site during the early part of the 12th Century. The building, as you see it now, started as a ‘Hall House’, probably in the 14th Century and would have been typical for well to do families in this period. Later additions, including the gabled side wings and stone porch, were added in the 17th Century. It was possibly during this time that the baronial fireplace and chimney were added, as well as the oak staircase and further windows.
During a later restoration in the mid 1980’s, the more modern conveniences were added along with the landscaped gardens which provided more fitting grounds for such an important and historic house.
This magnificent house has also been the subject of a much more recent restoration of the interior bringing the house squarely into the 21st Century. The house now enjoys a fine selection of outstanding period charm and history, coupled with modern fittings, convivial layout and engagement with outside.
The house has a wonderful flow with life centring around the Great Hall. This is a dramatic space with large open fire and excellent lighting through its large windows. The rear hall provides independent or linked access to the kitchen/breakfast room and dining room. The panelled drawing room and conservatory are more intimate spaces for everyday family life. The glazed cloisters provide access to the rear family room which doubles as a games and cinema room. There is an adjacent practical utility room.
The upper floor provides a flexible layout for family and guest alike with a dedicated guest wing and two floors of family accommodation, a total of six well-proportioned bedrooms and four bathrooms.
Outside
The house sits well within its plot, centrally located and at the head of the gated driveway. There is ample parking including both covered parking and a garage.
The gardens were beautifully landscaped many years ago and now boast a plethora of mature plants and trees. It was designed with linked ‘rooms’ which include lawned terraces, water gardens, Provence style courtyards, gravel and laburnum walks, meandering pathways and clipped yew heading providing complete privacy. The landscaped garden to the rear of the house is perfect for children to explore with its tree house and climbing wall.
Situation
Parks Court is nestled in the intimate village of Upton Scudamore and provides complete privacy to all angles with excellent views to the front. The village offers a parish church and a well-regarded village pub – The Angel Inn, part of the La Campagna chain of Italian restaurants with takeaway facilities. There is a more extensive array of facilities in Warminster, about 2 miles away.
Slightly further afield at 17 miles away is the elegant City of Bath with its multitude of shops, restaurants, thermal spa and Roman Baths. The cathedral City of Salisbury is equally accessible being 25 miles to the south-east.
For cycling enthusiasts, it is possible to cycle from the property onto Salisbury Plain with its gravel trails and a 50km circular route without any main roads. A glorious route that is on your doorstep.
This area has become particularly sought-after because of the exceptional number of good schools, both state and private, at all levels including Warminster School, Dauntsey’s and St Mary's Calne, as well as the schools in nearby Bath such as Downside School, Monkton Combe and King Edward’s.
Communications are excellent with the A303/M3 providing good access to London and the west country. Rail travel links are provided at Westbury train station (3 miles away) with a main line to London Paddington in 1 hour 17 mins and Warminster with a main line to London Waterloo in 1 hour 55 mins.
