Location
Gilwern is a village situated between the historic market town of Abergavenny and the picturesque town of Crickhowell. The popular village is where you can find many local amenities such as shops, newsagents, pubs, hairdressers, schools, and places of worship. The Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal runs through the village and is ideal for cycling or walking along the towpath and into the beautiful countryside of the Brecon Beacons National Park and surrounding hillsides.
Gilwern is blessed with 3 charming pubs, all within 3-4mins walk of my house. "The Towpath" is particularly cosy in the winter with tasteful decor, log burners, and canal-side outdoor summer seating. Great stone-baked pizzas, cocktails and guest chef events. It can be reached from my house just by walking across the stone bridge in front of the house and up a zig-zag forest path (approx 3 minutes walk).
There is also a fantastic park in Gilwern with separate enclosed play areas for toddlers, an area with larger swings and slides for children and a skatepark and bmx track for teenagers. There is also a football pitch, bowling green and basketball court.
Within a 3-minute walk, there is a petrol station and another convenience store. Both are open until 9 p.m., which is handy when you need to grab some household essentials. There's also an award-winning family Butcher's and a Chemist for convenient prescriptions.
