This unique property was originally built in 1873 as a cottage hospital, converted to a private home in the 1950s and recently sensitively renovated by the current owners. Set in 4.67 acres of grounds comprising a spacious terrace and sweeping lawns interspersed with trees and surrounded by woodland, it also includes a separate single storey cottage, detached annex with double garage and a detached garage and workshop with huge potential.
The drive leads to spacious parking areas and the beautiful arched entrance of the main house with wonderful features including flint walls and high chimneys. Internally it has delightful fireplaces, ornate curved ceilings and much of the original cupboards and wood flooring. There is a spacious dining hall with a cast-iron fireplace, an elegant dual aspect sitting/dining room with original fireplace and the dual aspect kitchen/breakfast room with a central island/breakfast bar, units with quartz worktops and French doors to the terrace. This floor also includes a contemporary family bathroom, separate shower room, utility room, a double bedroom and a lobby with built in cupboards, a cloakroom and the dual aspect principal suite with a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite bathroom. The lower floor includes a double bedroom, a small seating area, a wine cellar and a second double bedroom plus a snug, a boot room, a study and an external door.
The characterful detached Cottage, originally the nurses' residence, is now a delightful home. The original arched front door opens into a lobby and then a spacious but cosy hall with a log burning stove. There is a dual aspect sitting room, a modern bathroom and a double bedroom with ensuite shower, walk in dressing room and wardrobes. The large kitchen/dining room includes French doors to a private garden.
Adjacent to the double garage is the entrance to the charming Lodge that opens into a living space with kitchen area. There is a new shower room and a double bedroom, while on the first floor, a sitting room and an office/bedroom.
The Old Laundry is an additional garage with electrics and storage.
What the Owner says:
We moved here over two years ago with a view to it being our ‘forever' home, however business commitments mean that we must move. We hope that new owners will enjoy everything we have done to enhance this magical home. We have carefully renovated the whole property, including new kitchens, bathrooms, windows, secondary glazing and creating ‘The Lodge'.
We fell in love with the character of the place and the location as soon as we saw it. Although the property is surrounded by nearly five acres of grounds and has lovely views over the surrounding countryside, we are not isolated. We can walk into the village and to the delightful Updown Farmhouse hotel and restaurant as well as having easy road access to Sandwich, Dover, Deal, Canterbury and London.
Eastry has a convenience store, post office, hairdressers and a beauticians as well as a tea room, butchers, bakers, pharmacy, local pub, takeaway and the village hall offering regular activities. There is a local primary school as well as the excellent Northbourne and St Faiths prep schools nearby. For older children the St Roger Manwood Grammar School in Sandwich is very well respected and there are a good number of very good private and state secondary schools in Canterbury, Dover and Thanet.
It is only a short drive to historic Sandwich with its medieval properties, shops, restaurants and mainline station with the high speed trains to London.
