Description

Nestled in a highly sought-after village location, this charming four-bedroom detached property was once a traditional two-bedroom cottage, now beautifully extended and renovated to create a substantial county residence. Offering a unique blend of character and modern comfort, the property is set within extensive gardens that wrap around the home, providing a tranquil and private outdoor space for all to enjoy.

Once home to a cider press and mill, the property retains a sense of history while boasting contemporary updates. The large gravelled driveway provides ample parking with a turning circle, ensuring ease of access. A range of outbuildings further enhances the property's appeal, including a garage, workshop, greenhouses, and a garden shed - ideal for those with green fingers or in need of extra storage space.

Inside, the property offers bright and airy living accommodation, with well-proportioned rooms designed for family living. Notably, the home benefits from a lift that conveniently transports you from the ground floor to the first-floor master bedroom en-suite, making it suitable for all levels of accessibility and adding to the property's multi-generational living potential.

The location is ideal, offering the peaceful charm of village life while being just a short distance from the bustling town of Lydney, with its array of local amenities, schools, and transport links. This exceptional home offers a fantastic opportunity for those seeking space, comfort, and practicality in a highly desirable area. Perfect for growing families or those looking for an adaptable living space with excellent accessibility, this property truly has it all.

Situated in the parish of Aylburton, which benefits from a Primary School, Church, two public houses and countryside walks. Lydney town (approximately 1 mile away) offers a wide range of facilities including a variety of shops, Banks, Buildings societies and supermarkets, as well as a Sports Centre, Golf Course, Hospital, Doctors surgeries, Train Station, Primary and Secondary Schools.

What the vendor has mentioned about the property's history:

The house was in the possession of the Bledisloe family of Lydney Park Estate for over 200 years, originally a 2 bedroom cottage with a cider press and mill at the rear, hence its eventual name of "Milling House". Part of the millstone is in the garden beneath the 200+ year old mulberry bush which still crops well.

When Ewart Horsfall, the previous Lord Bledisloe's best friend and rowing partner at university, (also an Olympic Gold and Bronze medallist) passed away in 1974 his Lordship offered the cottage to his widow Betty Horsfall.

It was Betty who more than tripled the cottage footprint to what you see today. I still have, and will leave with the house, many of the original architects drawings and internal details.

Betty was a well known gardener and writer, and completed over 17 trips to Russia collecting rare and unusual plants, many of which are planted in the orchard next to Milling House. Betty described it as her arboretum, the orchard is still owned by the Estate.

Betty spoke fluent Russian and inherited a large number of Russian Icons from her father which were displayed around the house along with an impressive array of silver, hence the baize lined and alarmed "Butler's Pantry".

On passing the majority of her estate was left to Liverpool University and used to create the "Betty Horsfall Gallery".
