Built in 1817 as an inn, the Somers Arms, by John Cocks in anticipation of coaching trade on the new Brighton Road from Povey Cross, near the present day Gatwick Airport, to Gatton Point, south of Merstham, which took place the following year. Its position at the point where the Brighton Road crossed Mill Street/Hooley Lane, which at the time was the route east out of Reigate to Bletchingley and beyond, meant that it stood at an important crossroads. However, custom was hit by the building of the railway in 1841 south through what later became Redhill, and it closed as a pub in 1846. John Cocks was a member of the Somers family, who were substantial landowners in the area, hence the pub name. When the pub closed, the name transferred to a pub on Raffles Bridge, now also closed.
The original Somers Arms then served for many years as the vicarage for St John's Church, renamed as the Firs.
It ceased to be the vicarage in 1929. It is now divided into flats, along with some later extensions to the original building (the extension dates from 1935).
The property comprises of bay-fronted 17'8 reception room, double bedroom with built-in cupboards, bathroom and kitchen with excellent work surface space and storage units. To the rear is residents parking.
