Location

Abergavenny is a market town, located in Monmouthshire, with a population of about 14,000 often known as the gateway to Wales, originally the site of a Roman fort, it later became a medieval walled town, the remains of the castle still remnant. The busy town lies at the confluence of the rivers Usk and Gavenny, and the town is almost entirely surrounded by mountains and hillls such as the Blorenge, Sugar Loaf and Skirrid. The town is six miles from the border with England, and is located where it A40 trunk road meets with the recently upgraded A465 "Heads of the Valleys" road. The part pedestrianised centre of town also has a thriving weekly market, the cattle market having been developed at Bryngwyn some three miles away in November 2013. The Welsh National Eisteddfod was held in Abergavenny in 2016 and the noted Abergavenny Food Festival is held in the second week of September each year. Other major events include the Steam, Veteran and Vintage Rally and a large country music festival. With the range of facilities that the area has to offer tourism in the region is now a significant portion of the local economy. Abergavenny Railway Station runs the Welsh Marches Line, from Newport to Hereford, connecting to the wider network including Manchester, Cardiff. Those aged over 70 may well remember the 1968 pop record by Marty Wilde called "Let's take a trip up to Abergavenny" with its catchy hook lines and interesting lyrics!
