Abergavenny is a market town, located in Monmouthshire, with a population of about 14,000 often known as the gateway to Wales, originally the site of a Roman fort, it later became a medieval walled town, the remains of the castle still remnant. The busy town lies at the confluence of the rivers Usk and Gavenny, and the town is almost entirely surrounded by mountains and hillls such as the Blorenge, Sugar Loaf and Skirrid. Other major events include the Steam, Veteran and Vintage Rally and a large country music festival. With the range of facilities that the area has to offer tourism in the region is now a significant portion of the local economy. Abergavenny Railway Station runs the Welsh Marches Line, from Newport to Hereford, connecting to the wider network including Manchester, Cardiff. Those aged over 70 may well remember the 1968 pop record by Marty Wilde called "Let's take a trip up to Abergavenny" with its catchy hook lines and interesting lyrics!
